Richard Schloss was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but has lived in Santa Barbara, California since he began painting in 1972. He completed a Master of Fine Arts in painting at the University of California – Santa Barbara in 1979. He initially explored many different styles and media, but focused on painting landscapes en plein air. He continues this practice today, but does most of his work in the studio.
His work focuses on the landscape at specific locations at particular moments in time, but the real subject is the quality of light and atmosphere. These moments are usually at dawn and dusk – those times of transition from darkF to light, while low light and sunlight cast deep shadows and brief highlights.
